The Pentagon Will Livestream a Firing Squad at Fort Hood
The firing squad execution of Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed, the Pentagon said Thursday, in what would be the first military execution in more than 65 years. Executions in the United States have been private for about nine decades, and the last public one was a 1930s hanging that drew thousands in Owensboro, Kentucky. John Mills, a lawyer who works with death row inmates, called the plan "unprecedented in the modern era" and said it stands on uncertain legal ground.
Cheap Canadian Drugs Face a Customs Cutoff This Month
Millions of Americans who buy cheaper prescription drugs from Canada could lose access when a customs rule takes effect later this month. The rule covers a wide range of imported goods, not only medicine, and is meant to collect tariffs and keep illegal drugs out of the country.
Democrats and some Republicans have objected, with the cost of living a leading issue four weeks before the midterm elections. Trump has made lowering drug prices one of his central answers to rising healthcare costs, and critics of the rule say it will land hardest on the patients who depend on those imports.
An ICE Officer Shot a Driver in the Neck in New York
A federal immigration officer shot a 28-year-old Dominican man in the neck on Thursday afternoon as he drove through Marble Hill in New York with a five-year-old boy in the car. City police identified him as Oscar Belgal, and he survived and was treated at a hospital.
Homeland Security said officers were trying to arrest the man in a targeted enforcement operation but did not say what led to the shooting. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said agents surrounded the car before firing multiple rounds and called it an "unconscionable and incredibly serious situation".

Deep Dive
Why a Ballot Mailed Late May Not Count
What it is: Election officials in most states use the postmark the Postal Service stamps on an envelope to decide whether a mail ballot was sent by Election Day. Because of changes the agency began rolling out in April 2025, an envelope may no longer be stamped the same day it is collected from a letter carrier, a post office counter, or a blue collection box. A ballot dropped in the mail on time can therefore end up carrying a postmark that arrives too late to count.
The detail: The changes come from what the Postal Service calls Regional Transportation Optimization, part of a ten-year plan begun in 2021 to stabilize its finances. It cuts daily pickups and shifts processing at certain post offices, especially rural ones. Those procedures were not fixed before this year's primaries, which saw ballot rejection rates rise in several states. A Brookings Institution analysis by Elena Patel estimates that an additional 43,000 to 55,000 ballots nationwide could be rejected as late this November.
Why it matters: Starting October 26, post offices affected by the changes have been told to separate returned ballots from other mail so managers can add postmarks by hand on the day they are collected, part of an "extraordinary measures" policy the agency uses for federal general elections. It still recommends mailing a ballot at least a week before a state's deadline. Patel said she was encouraged by the plan but noted that it is untested, particularly where staffing is thin.
What to watch: Whether hand-postmarking holds up in its first general election, and how many voters follow the advice some election officials are now giving, which is to skip the mailbox and use a drop box or the election office instead.
