The Big Read
Democrats Win Full Control of Congress in a Sweeping Rebuke of Trump
Democrats won both the House and the Senate in Tuesday's midterms and will control Congress for the first time since 2023. They flipped seven Republican-held Senate seats from North Carolina to Kansas, including Maine, where Troy Jackson ousted Sen. Susan Collins after nearly 30 years. Democrats also won several House districts Republicans had redrawn to help themselves.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is poised to become the first Black speaker of the House. President Trump said Democrats did a good job, though he insisted Republicans would have won in a landslide had he been on the ballot. He acknowledged the Iran war played a part and warned he would veto Democratic bills.
Georgia, Texas and New Mexico Make History in the Governor's Races
Georgia elected Keisha Lance Bottoms as the first Black woman elected governor of any state. Gina Hinojosa ousted Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and will be the state's first Democratic governor since 1995. New Mexico chose Deb Haaland as the first Native American woman to be elected governor in US history.
The results put Democrats on track for a majority of governorships for the first time in about 15 years. The party captured at least four Republican-held offices, including Ohio, where Amy Acton will be the first woman governor. At least four Black governors were elected in a single election for the first time.
Voters Reject Data Centers and an Abortion Ban at the Ballot Box
Voters approved or were leading on 33 local measures to restrict data centers late Tuesday, including outright bans, temporary moratoriums, and limits on energy use. Supporters of data center construction won only one measure in North Dakota as residents in Republican and Democratic cities alike push back on tech companies.
Missouri voters rejected a constitutional abortion ban placed on the ballot by the Republican-led legislature and reaffirmed a 2024 vote that lifted one of the country's strictest bans. The measure was paired with a ban on gender-affirming care for minors. Missouri was one of four states with abortion on the ballot.

Deep Dive
Only About Half of Americans Ages 65 to 74 Have a Retirement Account
What it is: Just under half of households headed by someone ages 65 to 74 had a retirement account in 2025, according to new Federal Reserve data. That is down from 51% in 2022 but in line with the last quarter century when the share ranged from 43% to 52%. Households headed by someone ages 45 to 64 were the most likely to have one at 63%.
The detail: Among households ages 65 to 74 that do have an account, the median balance was $257,000. That is up 17% from 2022 after adjusting for inflation and ties households 75 and older for the highest of any age group. The count includes IRAs and workplace plans like 401(k)s but not traditional pensions or Social Security.
Why it matters: A common rule of thumb is to withdraw about 4% of savings in the first year of retirement and then raise that amount with inflation. On the median balance, that works out to about $10,000 in the first year before Social Security or a pension. Many of today's older households spent much of their careers before 401(k)s and IRAs became widespread.
What to watch: Withdrawals from traditional 401(k)s and IRAs are generally taxable, and required minimum distributions begin at age 73 or later. Medical costs often rise with age and can be hard to predict. One way to plan is to add up guaranteed income and subtract it from expected spending to see what savings must cover.
