G20 Diplomats Leave Atlanta Without a Deal on Ukraine

Top diplomats from the Group of 20 largest world economies end two days of Atlanta talks without consensus, with divisions over Russia's war in Ukraine dominating. Host Marco Rubio will release a chairman's statement instead of a joint communique, after canceling the group photo when European diplomats objected to Russia's Sergey Lavrov.

Disagreements also spanned the US-Israeli war against Iran, US tariffs and the South China Sea, all of which have fed recent spikes in global fuel costs. Participants still agreed to work to make next month's G20 leaders summit, which President Trump will host at his Miami golf club in December, a success.

Trump Says the Iran War Will End Soon as Qatar Pushes for a Deal

President Trump said Friday the war with Iran is "going to end soon" without saying how, as Qatari mediators returned to Tehran to push for a peace deal. Iranian media say Tehran has yet to respond to a letter from Vice President JD Vance that Trump says is only about getting medical aid into Iran.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard said four oil tankers suffered explosions Friday after using unauthorized routes through the Strait of Hormuz in claims that could not be verified. The top US commander in the region says southern shipping lanes are safe and open. Iran's foreign minister separately threatened massive military strikes in response to any new attack.

Congo's Ebola Deaths Top 5,000 in the Second-Deadliest Outbreak on Record

Deaths in Congo's Ebola outbreak have passed 5,000 out of more than 10,000 infections in the latest government figures. That makes it the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak on record behind the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic that killed 11,000 people. The outbreak was declared in mid-May and is caused by the Bundibugyo strain.

There are no approved treatments or vaccines for that strain. The virus has reached eight of Congo's 26 provinces, and cases have been reported in Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria. Experts believe it may have spread undetected since at least February before the outbreak was declared.

Clocks Fall Back Sunday as a Push for Permanent Daylight Saving Time Stalls

What it is: Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. local time Sunday when clocks fall back one hour to 1 a.m. Most Americans will gain an extra hour of sleep. Sunsets will come earlier through November and December, and much of January as daylight keeps shrinking into winter.

The detail: Daylight saving time was first adopted in the US in 1918 during World War I to help reduce electricity use. The House passed the Sunshine Protection Act to make it permanent in July, but the bill has stalled in the Senate. Earlier this month, President Trump urged people to call what appeared to be the personal cellphone number of Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton over his opposition to the bill. Days later, Senate Majority Leader John Thune said there is "no clear path forward" for it.

Why it matters: Supporters say more daylight would benefit Americans during their most active hours. Opponents say it would leave students waiting for school buses and commuters traveling to work in darkness on winter mornings. Cotton says Congress has enacted permanent daylight saving time multiple times and repealed it each time after Americans experienced "absurdly late sunrises in the winter."

What to watch: Nineteen states have passed laws for permanent daylight saving time that cannot take effect unless Congress allows it. A 2025 poll found only 12% of US adults favor the current system while 47% oppose it. Unless Congress acts, the clocks will spring forward again on March 14 next year.
