A Single Typo Shouldn’t Cost You a Sale

A shopper types “running shos” and gets nothing back. Another types “red waterprof trail runners under $150” and hits the same wall. Both knew what they wanted.
Traditional site search relies on exact keyword matching, leaving shoppers stranded at “0 results found” screens.
Gladly understands what shoppers mean, typos and all. Instead of a dead end, they get products that fit what they asked for and a conversation that keeps them shopping.
The Big Read
Mississippi's Senate Race Is Too Close to Call With a Democrat Narrowly Ahead
Democrat Scott Colom led Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by 1,138 votes in Mississippi's Senate race Wednesday evening, with 96% of votes counted and about 50,000 ballots left. The state has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in more than 40 years, and President Trump won it by more than 22 points in 2024.
If Colom wins, he would be the first Black senator elected in Mississippi since 1875. The state has no automatic recounts, and mail ballots postmarked by Election Day count if they arrive within five business days. A political scientist said the race likely won't be called until at least Nov. 10.
Ships Are Hit in the Gulf as Iran Says Americans Voted Against the War
A tanker was struck by two projectiles about 50 nautical miles north of Qatar late Wednesday, a British military tracking agency said, with the crew's status unconfirmed. Iranian state TV said two more tankers and a towboat caught fire after striking mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a claim that could not be independently verified.
Iran's chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said the midterm results showed Americans reject the war and warned that ignoring that message would bring a nightmare. Colorado Democratic Rep. Jason Crow said, "The war has got to end," and indicated Democrats could use war powers votes and control over funding to push for that.
Democrats Ready a Long List of Investigations for Their New Majorities
Democrats returning to power in the House and Senate are planning a long list of investigations into the Trump administration, backed by the power to subpoena records and compel testimony. Rep. Robert Garcia of California, who is expected to chair the House Oversight Committee, put it bluntly in a statement: "LAWYER UP."
Committee staffers say priorities include the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, the president's business interests in Truth Social and cryptocurrency, and alleged misconduct by immigration agents. They also expect oversight of projects such as the White House East Wing remodel and a monumental arch. Trump has long denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein.

More Americans Are Turning to Libraries as Prices Keep Climbing
What it is: Librarians and patrons across the US say more people are leaning on public libraries as everyday costs rise. Several of the largest library systems shared data showing recent increases in cardholders, checkouts, and event attendance. A survey released in mid-October found that 44% of Americans have struggled in the past year to afford at least one basic necessity.
The detail: In-person visits, adult library card applications and Wi-Fi sessions at the Chicago Public Library each rose more than 11% year over year from January through July. In Los Angeles, digital checkouts and library visits both rose more than 20%. Arizona's Maricopa County Library District saw use of the Kanopy streaming app climb 34% and the Hoopla app 78% over three years.
Why it matters: Libraries offer much more than books, including free movie streaming, help with online job applications and "libraries of things" that lend out items like Wi-Fi hotspots, camping gear and induction cooktops. One survey found that 56% of libraries offered food security services last year. Library use also rose during the 2001 recession and the Great Recession, though not every study has found that link.
What to watch: The White House budget proposal in April called for eliminating funding for the federal agency that gives grants to libraries, after the administration tried to cancel those grants last year and reinstated them once 21 states sued. Libraries rely on a mix of federal, state and local money and must make the case for funding every year.
