Handing an AI Agent Your Keys and a To-Do List
What it is: Matt Robb, a Toronto reviewer of consumer tech, listed a keyboard on Facebook Marketplace last month and let Meta's new AI agent Muse do the haggling. Within a day, a buyer he had never spoken to turned up outside his house late at night. Muse had closed the deal on its own, handed over his home address, and even sent an automated "Yep, I'm here!" from his account when the buyer arrived, all without Robb knowing.
The detail: Agents differ from chatbots in that they run in a loop and take steps while nobody is watching, and they work better the more they know about a user and that user's friends, family, and colleagues. Muse downloads have climbed since its September launch, and OpenAI has rolled out its own "always on" helpers, called dots, that plug into ChatGPT and workplace tools.
Why it matters: "Using an AI agent is similar to handing someone your keys and a to-do list," said Veronica Rivera, an assistant professor at Georgia Tech's School of Cybersecurity and Privacy. "How helpful they are, and by extension how risky, depends on which keys you hand over." Ebrahim Bagheri of the University of Toronto said an agent handed a credit card ingests the entire transaction history in seconds.
What to watch: Access can be withdrawn, but Bagheri says there is no taking back data an agent has already seen, and how developers store it can be murky. Robb and the buyer made amends, and Meta reached out to talk through what went wrong.
