Israelis Vote in a Tight Election That Could Take Weeks to Decide
Israelis are voting Tuesday in an election that polls show is close between coalitions backing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former military chief Gadi Eisenkot. Neither bloc is expected to reach the 61 seats needed for a majority in parliament, which means the next government could take weeks to form.
The campaign has centered on security, with the opposition blaming Netanyahu for the failures behind the October 7 attacks and pushing for an independent inquiry he has resisted. Netanyahu has cited what he calls strategic victories in Israel's wars and his close ties to Trump. If no one can form a coalition, Israel could hold another election.

SNAP Enrollment Falls to Its Lowest Level Since 2009 as Food Banks Strain
Enrollment in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program has fallen to its lowest national level since 2009, and Texas rolls dropped 20.8% in a year to a 17-year low of 2.8 million people. Experts say the declines appear linked to the 2025 federal law that tightened eligibility standards and expanded work requirements.
Food banks in Texas report record need, and many are limiting how often people can visit or how much they receive. Children make up more than half of the state's decline since September 2025. The state's health agency says it will keep helping eligible Texans get benefits while enforcing the new rules.

Deep Dive
Americans Lose Billions to Overseas Scams, and Few Get Their Money Back
What it is: A congressional report released Tuesday found that the US government has no unified accounting of how much money has been seized from overseas scam compounds or returned to victims. Sen. Maggie Hassan and Rep. Don Beyer released it as the ranking Democrats on the Joint Economic Committee. It calls for more collaboration across agencies along with more support for victims and deeper private sector involvement.
The detail: Americans reported nearly $18 billion in cyberfraud losses to the FBI last year, or more than $2 million an hour. The FBI told the committee it returned $336 million to scam victims in 2025. The Federal Trade Commission returned $1.83 billion to fraud victims in fiscal 2025 but could not say how much had been lost to overseas compounds. The Secret Service returned more than $770 million over two fiscal years from a range of fraud schemes.
Why it matters: Hassan said criminal organizations exploit US technology, including AI, to target Americans. The report also raised concern that State Department cutbacks ended an anti-scam training program in Bangladesh. The State Department told the committee it "has the tools it needs to combat the threat internationally."
What to watch: The report urged Congress to pass pending legislation that would create a unified federal strategy and a central place for victims to report losses. The White House has also advocated for greater federal coordination. The US has stopped short of holding tech and financial companies potentially liable for failing to protect consumers, unlike the European Union and Britain.
