President Trump on Saturday rejected an Iranian plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, telling reporters as he left the White House that the deal "would not be acceptable." He offered no further explanation, adding only that Iran wants the strait opened "immediately because they're losing so badly."

Iran pitched the proposal at the UN General Assembly this week, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran passed Washington a "concrete seven-day plan" through Qatar. President Masoud Pezeshkian told CBS that UN nuclear inspectors could return if the US accepts the plan and nuclear negotiations resume.

Boeing said it flagged a software glitch on some 737 Max jets last month that could affect certain landing procedures, and the FAA said Saturday it "will take immediate action if it identifies a safety concern." The problem can surface after a missed approach, when pilots alter a preprogrammed flight path.

What it is: With a nor'easter and Hurricane Nolo lashing US coastlines, insurance experts warn that many homeowners have a big coverage gap and don't know it. About 90% of owner-occupied US homes are insured, but typical policies exclude certain disasters and cap payouts for certain items or types of damage.

The detail: Law professor Kenneth Klein analyzed 74,000 California fire-related claims from 2018 to 2023 and found more than 70% of insured homeowners were underinsured, by roughly 20% on average. He calls it "a barely hidden nationwide crisis of underinsurance."

Flooding is the biggest trap. Standard policies generally don't cover water entering from the ground up, yet about 99% of US counties have flooded in the past 20 years, and fewer than 4% of households hold a National Flood Insurance Program policy. FEMA puts the average flood claim from 2020 to 2024 at $82,614.

Why it matters: Rebuilding has gotten pricier. Replacement costs for property-and-casualty losses rose 45% from 2020 to 2023, according to a Treasury report, so a limit that looked fine a few years ago may no longer cover a rebuild. "Coverage gaps are often discovered at the time of the loss," said Lareesa Klingler of the brokerage Lockton.

What to watch: Experts point to add-ons such as extended replacement cost coverage, which generally adds 10% to 50% above a policy's dwelling limit, and ordinance-or-law coverage for code upgrades. Flood policies generally take effect 30 days after purchase, so waiting until a storm is approaching leaves homes exposed.
