The Big Read

Coast Guard Hunts for Air Ambulance Jet Missing off Nantucket

A Canadian-registered air ambulance jet carrying six people, including four crew members, went missing early Saturday on an overnight medical flight from Bermuda to Boston, and the US Coast Guard is searching the waters off Nantucket, Massachusetts.

FlightAware tracking data show the Gulfstream G100 plunged sharply from about 24,000 feet to 11,000 feet before its communications went dark, and four of the six people aboard were Canadian nationals, Canada's transport minister, Steven MacKinnon, said.

Trump Urges Arkansans to Call Tom Cotton Over Daylight Saving Time

President Donald Trump urged Arkansans to call Tom Cotton on Saturday, posting what appeared to be the Arkansas Republican's personal cellphone number on social media to press him to back a bill making daylight saving time permanent.

Cotton, whom Trump blamed for stalling the House-passed bill, replied Saturday in his own social media post that Congress enacted permanent daylight time multiple times before and repealed it after Americans endured "absurdly late sunrises" during the winter.

Hemp THC Sellers Fight to Survive a Federal Ban Set for December

America's multibillion-dollar market for impairing hemp products, from THC seltzers sold at some Target stores to gummies, faces a federal ban taking effect Dec. 11, after a delay, that would cap THC at just 0.4 milligrams per container.

Whitney Economics estimated in a report last month that the ban could cut retail revenues by $28.3 billion and displace 225,000 jobs nationwide, as the hemp industry lobbies Congress for 21-and-older age limits and per-package THC caps instead.

Doctors Push Back on Energy Drinks Courting Young Sports Fans

What it is: A newly formed coalition of doctors is asking the Big 12 Conference to pause its sponsorship deal with Monster Energy, warning it promotes high-caffeine drinks to kids. The group also wants the NCAA to review energy drink marketing to young people, citing the deaths of three children, including 16-year-old South Carolina student Davis Cripe.

The detail: Caffeine content runs from 80 to 300 milligrams per serving, while the American Academy of Pediatrics advises teens aged 12 to 18 to stay under 100 milligrams daily. Federally funded survey data show 23% of 12th graders, 20% of 10th graders and 18% of eighth graders report drinking energy drinks daily, despite pediatricians urging kids to skip them.

Why it matters: The deal puts a co-branded logo on football and basketball jerseys, fields and courts, and Idaho cardiologist Matthew Nelson warned kids will mistake the drinks for sports drinks. Monster says more than 100 billion energy drinks have been sold and safely consumed worldwide, and industry labels already warn the products are not intended for children.

What to watch: The NCAA told the doctors it cannot regulate conference sponsorships, though one of its committees recently commissioned a cardiac advisory group, leaving the next move to the Big 12. Pediatrician Tamara Hannon urges parents to raise every beverage their children drink at checkups, a message she sums up in three short words: "Rethink your drink."
