The Big Read
Warsh Puts a Rate Hike Back on the Table
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh told Jackson Hole the Fed has work to do on inflation, and that summer's readings had not meaningfully improved the picture. Prices rose 3.4% in the year to July, well above the central bank's 2% target, and he declined to rule out hikes.
Traders repriced within hours, and the odds of a September hike jumped to nearly 60% from 35% on Thursday. Volatility fell rather than spiked, with the VIX touching 14.1, its lowest reading of the entire year.
Two Controllers Left LaGuardia's Tower an Hour Early
Two air traffic controllers left work an hour early on the night an Air Canada jet struck a fire truck crossing a LaGuardia runway. Both pilots died in the March 22 collision, and the two controllers now face possible firing, a government official told the Associated Press.
Their departure left two people in the tower, handling an unusual flurry of flights plus an emergency on another aircraft. NTSB investigators have not issued findings, and the official who described the staffing spoke on condition of anonymity.
Ceuta Boils Over a Month After the Crossings
Clashes have broken out between residents and new arrivals in Ceuta, Spain's exclave in North Africa, a month after the largest crossing yet. At least 72,000 people swam around the border fence from Morocco on 30 and 31 July, and at least 100 drowned.
Locals say they no longer feel safe and complain that schools, clinics and housing cannot absorb the numbers. Opposition parties accuse Spain's government of mishandling the crisis, and a month of official reassurance has not calmed the streets.

Today's Trivia
The human sense of smell is far more powerful than most people assume. A 2014 study dramatically revised the long-held estimate of how many distinct smells humans can detect. What did it find?
- The human nose can distinguish approximately 10,000 distinct odors — the figure scientists had believed since the 1920s
- The actual number is over 1 trillion distinct smells — the previous 10,000 estimate was based on faulty math from 1927
- Humans can detect roughly 50,000 distinct smells — more than previously thought but still far below most mammals
- The number varies dramatically by individual — super-smellers can identify over 500,000 while the average is closer to 3,000
