The Big Read

Ohio State Survives Indiana as a Sideline Ruling Ends a 22-Game Run

In a top-five rematch, Ohio State beat No. 5 Indiana 19-15 in Bloomington Saturday, snapping the Hoosiers' 22-game winning streak and their 19-game home winning streak. Indiana appeared to grab the lead late, but Nick Marsh's left foot was ruled out of bounds, protecting a margin built on Julian Sayin's fourth-down touchdown to Jeremiah Smith.

The win could prove costly, as Sayin hurt his right arm and watched the finish in a sling, and coach Ryan Day expects him out several weeks. Ohio State improved to 6-1 and 4-0 in the Big Ten, while Indiana's streaks had been the two longest active runs in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Trump Calls His Second Term "Much More Powerful" at a Kentucky Rally

Rallying in Highland Heights on Saturday, President Trump called his second term "a much more powerful term" than his first while campaigning for Kentucky House candidate Ed Gallrein. Trump told the crowd the Iran war would end soon and gas prices would fall, and repeated his promise of $5,000 for every adult if Republicans win Congress.

The pledge would likely cost more than $1 trillion and require congressional approval, while Trump also floated a Defense Department investment in a Kentucky drug manufacturing facility. Gallrein beat Rep. Thomas Massie in the GOP primary with Trump's backing, and when Trump called Massie a "loser," about half the arena clapped while the rest stayed silent.

Twelve-Foot Alligator Kills a Fisherman on a Central Florida Lake

A nearly 12-foot alligator attacked and killed a 71-year-old man fishing from the shore of Lake Apopka on Friday evening, about 15 miles northwest of Orlando. Police said the alligator was removed by trappers, while other active gators nearby complicated any rescue of Steven Hamilton, whose body was recovered about two hours later.

It was Florida's second deadly alligator attack this year, after 31-year-old Brittany Clark was killed by a 13-foot alligator near her Oviedo home back in June. Attacks remain relatively rare despite roughly 1.3 million alligators statewide, though a police captain noted Lake Apopka has plenty of them and sightings there are common.

What the Pope's Lung Cancer Says About a Disease Nonsmokers Get Too

What it is: Pope Leo XIV left Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Saturday afternoon, his fifth day there and sooner than expected, after surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung. The 71-year-old pontiff walked out without physical support, and his doctors said he is expected to lead Sunday's Angelus prayer from the window of the papal apartment.

The detail: The roughly 90-minute, video-assisted operation went further than the "localized nodule" Leo described to crowds last Sunday, and tissue tests confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, the diagnosis his doctors had suspected. Leo is not known to have smoked, though cancer runs in his family: his mother died of it in 1990, and his Florida-based brother Louis was hospitalized with cancer.

Why it matters: Adenocarcinoma makes up about 40% of all lung cancers in the U.S., making it the nation's most common form, and it is also the most common type among nonsmokers. Doctors not involved in his care say the approach points to cancer caught early, with pulmonologist Vin Gupta calling surgery as the first tool "a really good sign."

What to watch: Leo's office has cleared his public schedule until at least Oct. 20, the Vatican has announced no further treatment, and a spokesperson put the expected recovery at about one week.
