The Big Read
Erie Shooting Leaves Nine Dead, Including Two Children and the Gunman
A 45-year-old gunman killed eight people in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday, including two young children and a pregnant woman, before police found him dead. Video showed the two women killed outside, aged 51 and 37, trying to get help from neighbors before the gunman emerged.
Chief Rick Lorah said the gunman was related to seven victims, the eighth a friend of the pregnant woman, adding "mental health is at play here." "I have not seen anything like this in my 28-plus years," Lorah said, as Gov. Josh Shapiro offered Erie his administration's full support.
Fort Hood Shooter's Livestreamed Execution Plan Draws Fire From Vatican
President Trump said Saturday he is still deciding whether to livestream the Dec. 3 firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 at Fort Hood in 2009. Marking World Day Against the Death Penalty, Pope Leo XIV declared capital punishment "inadmissible" hours after his top deputy called the planned U.S. public execution "unacceptable."
Hasan would be the first executed by a military firing squad since 1945, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's livestream plan drew bipartisan criticism. Rep. Austin Scott, a Georgia Republican, said "live-streaming executions is what jihadists do," while Vice President JD Vance said he won't watch.
Putin Relays Iran's Vision for Ending the War to Trump, Kremlin Says
Russian President Vladimir Putin passed Tehran's vision for ending the Iran war to President Trump, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russia's Interfax news agency Saturday. Peskov said the message came in agreement with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, whom Putin met at a summit in Turkmenistan before reportedly phoning Trump.
Interfax gave no details of Iran's terms, and the White House did not confirm the call in a war that began Feb. 28 with U.S.-Israeli airstrikes. An interim June deal to pause hostilities quickly collapsed, and Iran has stepped up near-daily attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

Deep Dive
Labor Department Bars Eight Tech Firms From Sponsoring Green Cards
What it is: The Trump administration on Thursday suspended eight tech companies from sponsoring foreign workers for green cards, which grant immigrants permanent residency, through the Labor Department's PERM program. The move does not affect H-1Bs, which are temporary work permits, but all eight rank among the top 50 H-1B sponsors, and most are IT services firms.
The detail: Vice President JD Vance singled out Microsoft, claiming it replaced the 6,000 workers it laid off in 2025 with H-1B hires, calling it "a great American company." Federal data show Microsoft received 6,258 H-1B approvals last year, but two in three went to people already working there rather than workers new to the company.
Why it matters: Trump supporters have long argued these visa programs undercut American workers by encouraging employers to hire from abroad, and the crackdown has now reached beyond tech. At the same Thursday news conference, the Labor Department's inspector general, Anthony D'Esposito, announced an investigation into alleged J-1 visa fraud involving nine major American universities.
What to watch: Amazon, the top sponsor with 19,178 approvals, brought in nearly four times as many H-1B workers new to the company as Microsoft, yet was left off the list. Watch how the J-1 probe into nine major universities unfolds, and whether the Labor Department adds other large H-1B sponsors to its green card suspension list.
