Researchers traced the melanoma-like disease to brown bullhead catfish in Lake Memphremagog, a long, narrow lake that straddles the border between Vermont and Quebec. Unlike cancers that arise independently in each animal, this disease appears to spread through the transfer of living cancer cells between fish.

The detail: Roughly one-third of the lake's bullheads now carry the tell-tale black, cancerous lesions, according to a team led by molecular biologist Julie Dragon at the University of Vermont. Until now, contagious cancers had been confirmed in only three groups of animals—domestic dogs, Australia's Tasmanian devils, and several species of soft-shell clams and other bivalves. Genetic testing showed the tumors share nearly identical DNA, providing strong evidence they originated from a single cancer lineage rather than developing separately in each fish.

Why it matters: Transmissible tumors upend the way we think about cancer, converting a private cellular malfunction into something that behaves like an infection, physically passing living tumor cells from one animal to the next. Each new case hands scientists a rare natural laboratory for studying how rogue cancer lineages evolve to survive and even thrive inside an entirely foreign immune system. Insights from these unusual diseases could eventually improve researchers' understanding of cancer evolution, immune evasion, and disease transmission across species.

What to watch: The pressing question is whether this cancer stays penned inside Memphremagog or begins jumping to other lakes, rivers, and fish species across the region. Ecologists will monitor infection rates closely, because an unchecked transmissible cancer can gut a wildlife population, as one nearly did to the Tasmanian devil.
