The Big Read
Stephen Miller Takes Over as White House Chief of Staff
President Trump named Stephen Miller his new chief on Friday, replacing Susie Wiles three days after Republicans lost both chambers of Congress in this week's midterm elections. Miller has been the architect of many of Trump's most controversial policies, especially on immigration, and Trump told reporters later that afternoon, "Stephen's been with me since the beginning."
The shake-up follows an election in which data show voters backed Democrats partly because of the administration's aggressive immigration enforcement, the policy area Miller has shaped most closely.
Justice Department Loses Three Senior Officials in Two Days
The top federal prosecutor in Miami, Jason Reding Quiñones, who oversaw the "grand conspiracy" probe into President Trump's foes, resigned Friday amid a wave of post-midterm departures. National security chief John Eisenberg also resigned Friday, a day after Harmeet Dhillon, who led an overhaul of the department's Civil Rights Division, announced her exit.
People familiar with the matter said the probe has shown signs of faltering, with investigators recently postponing scheduled grand jury testimony from several witnesses amid staff turnover.
Historic 1,000-Year Flood Leaves Georgia-Tennessee Towns Buried in Mud
The storm behind a 1,000-year flood along the Tennessee-Georgia line moved up the East Coast on Friday, prompting flood advisories in coastal areas from North Carolina to Massachusetts. The surrounding mountain watershed took 10.28 inches of rain in just six hours, and swift-water teams from both states rescued dozens before the water receded.
The flood, linked to at least one death, was McCaysville, Georgia's second disaster in three months, and its police department "lost virtually everything" a week after reopening its renovated building.

Fox Now Owns Roku, and Here's What It Means for Your TV Screen
What it is: Fox Corp. completed its $22 billion Roku acquisition on Friday after the Justice Department closed its antitrust review, finding the deal "is not likely to result in harm to competition." Roku founder Anthony Wood becomes co-chair of a new Fox division housing Roku, Tubi and Fox One, while Tubi CEO Anjali Sud and Roku Media president Charlie Collier are departing.
The detail: To clear the deal, Fox committed to carrying non-Fox content on Roku for at least three years and promised not to discriminate against rivals' content in search results. Users can still rearrange apps on their home screens, and Fox must keep firewalls around rivals' click, search, view and voice data for at least three years.
Why it matters: A major TV network now owns a streaming platform that depends on other companies' shows, which is why regulators examined whether Fox might use Roku to disadvantage its content rivals. The Justice Department concluded that degrading Roku would cost Fox money and reputation, noting that unhappy viewers could simply switch to other connected TV platforms.
What to watch: The key protections expire after three years, and the Justice Department said it will keep evaluating competition and "may take appropriate action" if facts or circumstances change. Roku's revenue grew 23% to $4.1 billion in the first nine months of 2026, handing Fox a fast-growing business it has promised to run as an "open ecosystem."
