What it is: The national average for diesel hit $6.05 a gallon Friday, up from $5.85 a week earlier and $3.70 a year ago. Before the war began in late February it was $3.76. Regular gasoline averaged $4.29.

The detail: Brent crude topped $108 a barrel Thursday before settling near $105 on Friday, with Saudi exports down to 3.2 million barrels a day — the lowest in more than a decade. Adjusted for inflation, the 2008 peak works out to about $7.20 a gallon in today's money and the 2022 record to about $6.56, so this is not a record yet. It is simply expensive without a ceiling in sight.

Why it matters: Fuel is roughly 15% to 30% of the total cost of food, which is why a trucking input shows up in produce, not just at the pump. Amazon has added a temporary 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on some third-party sellers. "The market is not returning to calm, it is adjusting to the new normal," said Jim Burkhard, global head of crude oil research at S&P Global Energy.
