The Big Read

Hurricane Isaias Comes Ashore in Florida and Knocks Out Power

Hurricane Isaias made landfall on Friday night along the northern Gulf Coast of Florida with heavy rain and powerful winds, and it has since been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone. Hundreds of thousands of households in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia are without power, and all three states have declared emergencies.

The storm is still moving across the southeastern United States, with warnings of life-threatening storm surge along the coast. Forecasters have warned of flooding well inland. Isaias was the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, and it is one of three storm systems affecting North America this weekend.

Florida Calls Off an Execution for the First Time Under DeSantis

Governor Ron DeSantis has withdrawn a death warrant for the first time since taking office, calling off the execution of William Lee Thompson days before he was scheduled to die by lethal injection. DeSantis signed the letter on Thursday, in a state that runs the nation's busiest death chamber.

Thompson, 74, had been scheduled to die within days. DeSantis has used the death penalty aggressively in his final term, and this is the first time he has pulled back a warrant he had already signed, in a state that has carried out more executions this year than any other.

Arlington County Sues to Stop Trump's Triumphal Arch

The Arlington County Board is suing to halt construction of the 250-foot Triumphal Arch that Trump wants built at Memorial Circle, becoming the first government body to take the project to court. The site sits on federal parkland across Memorial Bridge, immediately next to the county.

Filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, the suit says the National Park Service is "proceeding full-speed toward ground-disturbing construction" without completing environmental review. Board chair Matt de Ferranti called the project egregious and unlawful. A White House spokesman said the administration has been fastidiously compliant with every legal requirement.

Deep Dive

Why California Democrats Are Fighting a Billionaire Tax

What it is: Proposition 40 would impose a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of Californians worth more than $1 billion, the first tax on billionaires' wealth anywhere in the country. It applies to billionaires living in the state as of January 1, and about 90% of the revenue would replace federal healthcare cuts, with the rest going to education and food assistance. Voters decide on November 3, and mail ballots are already going out.

The detail: Opponents have raised more than $300 million, nearly a third of it from Google co-founder Sergey Brin, with John Doerr and Eric Schmidt also funding the committee fighting the measure. That is roughly ten times what the yes campaign has raised at $32.4 million. On advertising, the gap is wider still, because opponents have spent or booked about $96 million of airtime against $209,000 from supporters.

Why it matters: The opposition is not only tech money. Governor Gavin Newsom, Planned Parenthood's California chapter and the California Teachers Association all oppose it, while Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Ro Khanna campaign for it. "We just believe this proposal is seriously flawed and could do more damage than good," said Jodi Hicks, who runs Planned Parenthood's California affiliate. Newsom opposes this measure but has called for a national billionaire tax.

What to watch: Whether California's reliance on its wealthiest residents holds up. The top 1% of earners supply nearly half the state's personal income tax revenue, and opponents argue the tax would drive them out, while the union behind the measure says the state faces $100 billion in lost federal healthcare funding over five years.
