The Big Read
Gunman Dead After Shooting at Oregon Elementary School
At least two people were hospitalized after a shooting at Bend's Silver Rail Elementary Thursday afternoon, police said, and the attacker was shot and killed inside the building. A Bend police spokesperson said children are among the victims, though the conditions of those injured and whether there were more casualties were not immediately known.
Police were called about a shot fired into a car outside the school at 12:59 p.m. and arrived within minutes, as more 911 calls came from inside. Officers went room by room evacuating the kindergarten-through-fifth-grade school, which had 459 students last year, and it was unclear who fired the shot that downed the attacker.
Trump Calls Off Livestream of Fort Hood Shooter's Execution
President Trump canceled plans to livestream the Fort Hood attacker's firing squad execution Thursday after bipartisan backlash, including Vice President JD Vance saying he wouldn't watch. Trump wrote that airing it might have deterred terrorists, but many well-meaning people would rather not watch, while victims' immediate families can still view it in person.
Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist who opened fire on soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009, faces an Army firing squad on Dec. 3 in Texas. The military has not executed a service member by firing squad since World War II, and its last execution of any kind was a 1961 hanging.
Holiday Shoppers Expected to Spend $1 Trillion This Season
Americans will spend $1.01 trillion this November and December, the National Retail Federation forecast on Thursday, a 4.2% rise topping the 3.1% average outside the pandemic years. Economists say higher prices account for about half that growth, with higher-income shoppers buoyed by stock market gains expected to do much of the splurging this season.
Gas averaged $4.33 a gallon Thursday, up from under $3 before the Iran war, and experts expect pump prices to keep squeezing lower-income households through the holidays. Shoppers are adapting rather than retreating, trading down to cheaper brands, shopping earlier and leaning on credit cards and buy now, pay later plans, AlixPartners says.

Deep Dive
Medicare Enrollment Opens as Drug Costs Rise in 2027
What it is: Open enrollment for Medicare plans began Thursday and runs through Dec. 7, letting enrollees choose between traditional Medicare, private Medicare Advantage plans and standalone prescription drug coverage. Whatever they pick takes effect Jan. 1, when a slew of changes arrives just as inflation keeps pushing healthcare costs higher for many older Americans across the country.
The detail: The annual out-of-pocket cap for Part D drugs rises to $2,400 from $2,100, while the standard deductible climbs from $615 to $700 and a temporary premium subsidy ends early. New negotiated prices also kick in for 15 drugs, including Ozempic and Wegovy, which federal Medicare officials expect will cut prescription drug coverage costs by $685 million in 2027.
Why it matters: Social Security's 3.6% cost-of-living increase adds about $75 a month for nearly 72 million recipients next year, arriving at the same time as those higher drug caps and deductibles. Advocates also warn some Medicare Advantage plans are exiting certain areas and trimming benefits like dental coverage, which could mean more disruption than usual for enrollees this year.
What to watch: AARP's Nancy LeaMond urged seniors to shop around and compare options, and KFF's Juliette Cubanski said the window lets enrollees seek better coverage at possibly lower cost. With the Dec. 7 deadline less than eight weeks away, enrollees whose plans are leaving their area or cutting benefits will need to act before the window closes.
