The Big Read

US Ambassador Calls Settler Attack on American Photographer "Terror"

US Ambassador Mike Huckabee sharply condemned a West Bank settler attack that seriously injured American photojournalist Heidi Levine, calling it "a despicable act of terror." Levine, who has covered conflict zones for more than four decades, remains hospitalized in Tel Aviv after hand surgery, with broken ribs and other injuries.

She said settlers forced her to the ground and beat her for more than 10 minutes during an olive harvest that also left several Palestinians injured. Huckabee called for a full investigation, arrests and prosecution, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned "violence against anyone" but called the attack "alleged."

Truck Plows Through a Youth Soccer Game in Wichita, Killing Two

A woman drove a truck through a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, Saturday, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and hospitalizing 11 others. The 34-year-old driver is in custody and two children were in the truck, while the city canceled all complex events until further notice.

Victims ranged from 5 to 68, and police did not say whether the crash was intentional, saying they are still working to learn why. Police Chief Joe Sullivan said bystanders sprang into action before first responders arrived, while Gov. Laura Kelly said she was monitoring the situation.

Vance Faces Pointed Voter Questions on Iran War and Gas Prices

Vance said it was the first he had heard of it, but called troop placement "a huge mistake" that has since been changed. A Michigan Trump voter now backing a Democrat pressed him on gas prices, and Vance said there is "of course" a chance he skips 2028.

Deep Dive

A Wave of Basement-Made Drugs Is Reshaping America's Overdose Crisis

What it is: Homemade synthetic drugs are sweeping US streets, with users and recovery workers in Columbus and Chicago describing a supply that is no longer cut but mixed with fentanyl and meth. Overdose deaths peaked at about 110,000 Americans in 2022, mostly from opioids, and have fallen to around 70,000 last year, but the drugs behind them keep changing on the street.

The detail: In Franklin County, home to Columbus, 78% of fatal overdoses in the past year were tied to stimulants, often crack that buyers did not realize had been spiked with fentanyl. Additives now include xylazine, which can cause wounds deep enough to reach bone, and medetomidine, while synthetic cannabinoids soaked into mailed letters caused fatal seizures inside a large Chicago jail.

Why it matters: Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than heroin, so even a few-dollar hit can kill, and one Chicago-area transit station now dispenses naloxone free from a vending machine.

What to watch: Recovery workers are also testing drugs for new additives, and one kit brought to a Columbus recovery group tested positive for medetomidine, an animal sedative showing up in street supplies. A Chicago dealer working for Mexican cartels says his supply chain is as strong as ever, despite federal moves labeling cartels terrorist groups and fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction.
